Miriam Cummings

Guest Instructor | Guest Artist

Miriam (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist, actor, and educator who makes performance, poetry, and prose on the ancestral, unceded territory of the Syilx Nation. The land she is on informs what she makes; in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, her work is wide.

Playful improvisation is at the core of Miriam’s artistic practice. Juxtapositions intrigue her: relationships created by proximity, bodies interacting with the natural / constructed world, and the resulting intimacy or lack thereof. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (Performance & Creative Writing) from UBCO and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) from Concordia University.

Based in Tiohtià:ke / Montréal for more than a decade, Miriam performed with local companies such as Repercussion Theatre, Montréal Improv, and co-founded Hopegrown Productions, an incubator for new plays. Her solo performance and research into psychologically safe actor training methods have been selected for residencies in Ontario, Québec, and British Columbia.

Miriam has instructed adults across the country for more than a decade, as Part-Time Faculty at Concordia University and as a guest at Sheridan College, Okanagan College, Geordie Theatre School, Kaleidoscope Theatre, and Rosebud School for the Arts, among many others. She is a lifelong learner, passionate about guiding students toward increased confidence and creativity and is delighted to be a regular instructor, collaborator, and student at Tempest.
